Aspiring cricketers of Rupununi will now be able to access the expert input of cricket coach Maurice Peters, following the intervention of Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds.
At a simple ceremony at his Wright Lane office, PM Hinds handed over the keys to a new Jailing 125CC motorcycle to Peters.
The gift will allow Peters to access residents as far as the Pakaraimas. The coach, who hails from the North Rupununi, disclosed that he had experienced problems extending his programme to South Rupununi, Central Rupununi and the Pakaraimas. He said that this resulted in many young people being denied an opportunity to hone their cricketing skills.
Peters sought the Prime Minister’s assistance when he visited the Region on an outreach programme in March.
He said that PM Hinds committed himself to render assistance. Yesterday’s ceremony was the culmination of PM Hind’s intervention.
Peters accepted the gift while expressing gratitude for the kind gesture. He assured the Prime Minister that the donation was indeed timely and would be used to enhance his training programme.
The coach intimated that it will now be possible to access all 22 schools from the North Rupununi right up to the Pakaraimas.
The young coach lamented the absence of adequate sponsorship to facilitate planned initiatives. He said that funds are acquired through fund raisers and other initiatives.
