It took the final round to decide the champion of the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Carifesta/Topco Juice Chess Tournament.
Heading into the final round, four players were tied on five points with veteran player Learie Webster in the lead based on the Median-Buchholz tie breaking system. In the final round, Nathoo was up against chess columnist Errol Tiwari, in a fierce battle.
It was Nathoo who prevailed and secure the top position using the Median-Buchholz tie breaking system. Webster took the second position, newcomer Jason Allicock was third, Haatram Persaud fourth and Michael Perreira fifth.
National Champion Kriskal Persaud, who took the early lead, suffered mixed fortunes on the final day as he experienced back to back loses to Learie Webster and Errol Tiwari in round six and seven respectively and had to settle for a draw in round eight against Perreira.
Junior Player Taffin Khan, who was second heading into the final day, faded to eleven.
The final points standing, Loris Nathoo and Learie Webster six points, Jason Allicock five and a half, Haatram Persaud, Michael Perreira, Errol Tiwari, Kriskal Persaud and Alexander Duncan on five, Irshad Mohamed and David Khan on four and a half, Taffin Khan and Shiv Nandalall on four, Ewan Devonish three and a half, Kenrick Brathwaite and Hemraj Sanichara three, Raoul Bhudu two and Alex Joseph on one point. In the junior category, Ryan Singh played unbeaten to capture top honours with eight points.
Saeed Ali was second with six points, Khalid Gajraj third with five points, Irshad Ishmael fourth with three and a half and Sheriffa Ali finished fifth with one and a half point.
The top five players in both categories received cash prizes. In a fine gesture, Loris Nathoo donated his prize to the Guyana Chess Federation.
The Tournament was sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco Juice Brand and was organized by the Guyana Chess Federation.
Jagdeo giving Exxon 102 cent to collect 2 cent.
