A fire of yet unknown origin yesterday razed a residence at Lot 24 Princes Street, Werk-en-Rust, while the heat from the blaze also damaged three neighbouring houses.
According to Neville Lewis, 24, an occupant of the house, he was on his way home from work when he discovered the building already aflame. His great-aunt, Jane Rodney, aged 95, was at home with his daughter when the fire started. They managed to escape the burning structure unharmed.
Those who were at home at the time suspect that the fire started in Lewis’s room at approximately 15:00 hours. Despite the fact that there were no reported injuries, Rodney was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) some time after she escaped from the blaze.
Residents of the house explained that they could not yet estimate the cost of the damage, as they were unable to save anything except a television set.
According to bystanders, the Guyana Fire Service arrived on the scene promptly, and while they did not manage to save the building, they were commended for the way they quickly contained the fire and stopped it from spreading to the neighbouring houses.
