– two UK players on exchange visitThe Guyana national female rugby squad in training for the upcoming NAWIRA Sevens Championships scheduled to be staged in the Bahamas on October 25-26 has begun to intensify preparations for the upcoming event under the watchful eyes of Head Coach Alton Agard and his assistant Cornel Millington, at the National Park.
Kaieteur Sport visited the session yesterday where they players went through a number of drills that included short sprints and rigorous physical exercise aimed at improving their fitness ahead of some planned game simulations which will start shortly.
The team also practiced passing the ball which according to Agard is meant to develop their ball handling skills, a facet he referred to an important feature in the sport.
Agard reported that sessions will continue on Wednesdays and Fridays and he is hoping that the full team assemble so that they can engage in a practice game.
So far, a few members have been forced to miss the sessions due to work commitments and the Coach is hoping that this situation is quickly rectified.
Meanwhile, two players from the United Kingdom (UK) arrived in the country recently and will embark on a four-week assignment as part of the BOOST Charity Exchange Programme.
The two players Alex Laybourne and Callum Convery were present at the practice session yesterday and immediately shared their experience with the squad and even participated in mock game scenario.
Laybourne, who attends Loughborough University said that the during the stint they will not only restrict themselves to on-field activities, but try to understand the Guyanese way of life as well.
“It is all part of the exchange programme and this is the third such visit by students from the UK.
Alex, the shorter of the two informed that he has been playing the game since the age of 6 which brings his experience in the sport to a total of 15 years, while Callum indicated that he became involved in the sport from the age of 11 and has racked up 9 years of knowledge.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
