Plaisance will make a grand entrance into the Ministry of Culture, Youth
and Sport Inter -Block football competition on Saturday while Buxton will bring the curtains down on theirs the same afternoon.
The Plaisance competition is set to blast off with a double-header under floodlights at the Plaisance Community Centre ground as 110 Block clashes with Industry in the opener, while 40 Block take on the tough Scheme unit in the feature event.
Six teams divided into two groups will vie for the ministry’s trophy. Goedverwagting, 40 Block and Scheme comprise Group A, while 110 Block, Industry and Front Side are in Group B.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony is schedule to witness the start of the competition and is also set to hand over prizes at the Buxton final between Friendship Front and Buxton Middle Walk.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry, Steve Ninvalle, disclosed that since the commencement of the ministry’s Inter-Block football events in March, over five hundred youths have participated.
Ninvalle added that the ministry is also currently running a female competition in Linden which will conclude shortly. So far the ministry has held competitions in Beterverwagting, Victoria, Ann’s Grove, Agricola, Mahdia, Pouderoyen and Buxton.
The government official informed that Grove on the East Bank is scheduled to start their competition on September 21 while he will be accompanied by coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte to Lethem Region Nine soon to host a similar exercise.
“The feed back has been very good and it has catered for a wide cross section of people. I have seen youths and ‘Big Youths’ participating.
There was a 49-year-old member of a team in the Buxton competition. I am very pleased with how it is unfolding,” the Parliamentary Secretary stated.
“People are now asking when we are coming to their area,” Ninvalle said of the Inter-Block activities yesterday. “We have held youth training camps, conducted by coach Hunte and his services are now very much in demand.”
The Inter-Block competition was designed by the Ministry with the aim of developing the sport at the grassroots level and also to serve as a precursor to a national Inter-Village competition.
