In a game reduced to 20 overs per side at the tiny GYO ground yesterday because of morning rain, the touring Combermere under-19 School team of Barbados defeated Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by 17 runs in their final game of their two-week tour to Guyana.
The Bajans, who depart Guyana this morning for home, fell for 155 in 17 overs and then dismissed the Thomas Lands unit for 138 with two balls left in the contest to end a successful tour by Combermere, coached former Barbados first class pacer Roddy Eswick.
Altab Habibulla achieved what many youngsters have failed to do in the recent past when he comprehensively bowled West Indies under-15 and Barbados under-19 opener Kraigg Braithwaite after the right-hander, who enjoyed a productive tour to this South American land, had made just 11 runs.
After the demise of the talented Braithwaite, Shane Jones (30), Jomel Warrican (23) and Barbados youth players Dario Vaughan (24) and Roston Chase (23) offered useful contributions in overcast conditions for the lads from the Land of the Flying Fish.
Former Guyana under-15 left-arm spinner Denis Legay snatched 4-10 while ex-Georgetown under-15 skipper Habibulla supported with 3-39.
MSC were led by an attractive 51 decorated with four sixes and four fours from Simon Sam and a cameo 16 with two fours and a six from Clifford Osbourne in their unsuccessful run chase as Vaughan, Warrican, Chase and Jones captured two wickets each for Combermere. (Sean Devers)
