A host of events are billed for Mining Week 2008, which kicked off yesterday.
The opening ceremony of a related exhibition was held yesterday afternoon at the Guyana Girl Guides Association headquarters, Brickdam.
Brief remarks were delivered by Prime Minister and minister responsible for mining, Samuel Hinds, Commissioner of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), William Woolford, and Chairman of the GGMC Board of Directors, Ronald Webster.
The exhibition is being held in the Girl Guides Pavilion for the rest of the week. The exhibition features a display of educational material, information on getting into the mining industry, displays of tools used by miners, and more. There is also a walk-through tunnel displaying a wealth of information on the history of mining, precious stones, rocks and posters.
Other activities planned are Porkknocker Day, which will be held in the mining community of Bartica on Saturday, Tacouba crossing race for miners, Warishi race for miners, and a camp-building competition, among others.
Mining Week is being held under the theme “The contribution of the porkknocker to the development of Guyana.”
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
