– cops suspect sabotage
The Guyana Police Force has warned that it will deal severely with vandals and thieves who have once again disrupted the services of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited (GT&T).
A police press release stated that officials from GT&T yesterday discovered severe damage and theft of cables in several areas around Georgetown.
According to the release, 600 pairs of cables behind the Brickdam Cathedral were cut and stolen.
This has since impaired telephone services to several residents in the area.
In addition, the telephone cabinet at Regent and Wellington Streets was also vandalized and several telephone wires within the cabinet were destroyed, the release added.
“The Guyana Police Force has since launched an investigation into the destruction and larceny, and what appear to be acts of sabotage.
“The Force wishes to warn persons that anyone caught in such acts would feel the full force of the law.
“These acts seem intended to disrupt proceedings during Carifesta, and will not be tolerated. Special patrols have been implemented to deter and detect persons engaging in these acts.”
