DEAR EDITOR,
The PNCR scrutineers who worked on the house-to-house registration process at Mahdia are yet to be paid for the months of May and June 2008.
Most of these scrutineers were women, who had to cross swamps and creeks as they traversed rough and distant terrain to register persons; yet, they cannot get their wages.
Please note that some of the current food prices in Mahdia are as follows: Brown rice is $1,000- $12,00 per gallon, Fernleaf and Kerrygold milk $800 per lb, kerosene is $1,280 per gallon and snapper $500 per lb. The bus ride to the city is $6000. How can these women cope with the cost of living if they are not paid?
The registration exercise, I agree, was important, but the scrutineers’ salaries are also important. So now that the exercise is over, I implore you, GECOM, please pay the scrutineers.
George Carrington
