Kristian Jeffrey put up a spirited fight but his efforts were insufficient against Southern Caribbean Squash champion, Barbadian, Shawn Simpson who won the match 4-9, 9-3, 9-4, 4-9, 9-6 to depict the kind of day Guyana experienced yesterday at the Georgetown Club Courts.
The hosts experienced mixed fortunes in play yesterday. They started off with a victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the opening tie of the day, 4-1, then going down to Barbados.
In the exciting evening match, Jeffrey drew first blood when he outclassed the lanky Barbadian in the first set 9-4. Simpson came out in the second set with a flailing racquet and scored four clear points before conceding the handout.
Jeffrey then made good use of the opportunity and closed the margin 4-3.
However, he was engulfed by the skill and determination of Simpson who went on to take the set 9-3.
Simpson continued his aggression and subsequently won the next set 9-4. Just when it seemed as though Simpson would have enjoyed similar fortunes in the next set Jeffrey rebounded with some fierce stroke play and comfortably prevailed 4-9. Obviously drained by the effort Jeffrey eventually surrendered the next set 9-6.
In a post game interview Simpson admitted that the game was indeed a stern test. He lauded Jeffrey for his consistency, dubbing him a good retriever. He said that Jeffrey is a good retriever which pressured him (Simpson) to play consistent squash.
Simpson also noted that Jeffrey was a fit player with superb recovery time between rallies. He said that Jeffrey is a bright prospect and envisages that he can reach as far as number 4 in the Caribbean if he continues in the same vein.
Guyana started their quest for honours when Oliver Downes convincingly defeated Bajan Rhett Cumberbatch 9-4 in their first set. However, this was an anticlimax as Downes rebounded to take the next three sets 9-2, 9-3, 9-3.
Raphael DeGroot was never in contention for a win against Fabien Goodridge and he went down 9-7, 9-7, 9-7. He was a bit unfortunate not to have been awarded several appeals for ‘yes lets’ when he was clearly blocked from returning his opponent’s serves. In the end it was small matter as he went on to suffer a distinctive loss.
The two other matches Robert Fernandes going down to Bajan Gavin Cumberbatch 3-1 and Regan Pollard faltered 3-1 to Bajan Mark Sealey.
In other matches played yesterday morning, Venezuela prevailed over the OECS 5-0. Francisco Valecillo def. Shane Slater (3-0) 9/1 9/3 9/5, Juan Pablo Rothie def. Kevin Hannaway 9/5 9/10 9/5.9/3, Juan Pablo Sanchez won from Kevin Bailey (3-1) 9/3 4/9 9/1 9/1, Alejandro Lopez and Fancisco Paradisi won by walkover.

At 12:00hrs the Guyanese women will do battle with the Bajan team, while later in the afternoon, at 15:00hrs, the Guyanese men will tackle Venezuela. Barbados and Trinidad men will play the final game, also at 15:00hrs on court Three.
