The Parrot Speaks…It’s Carifesta again!
O-Day is here! The Parrot like thousands of others is in can’t wait mode for the much anticipated opening ceremony for Carifesta X this afternoon at Providence.
This is the biggest thing for this generation.
Given the long and early lines for tickets during the week, it is almost certain that queues will probably take their cue from the rising sun, bringing back memories of the days of international cricket at good old Bourda. I wouldn’t be surprised if eager fans would have camped out from last night.
Carifesta X opens as the 29th Olympiad is about to end. The opening ceremony is expected to be grand, diverse, colourful and mesmerising. The entertainment is not confined to the green surface of the stadium alone, but in the skies as well, with para-troopers; it will climax with fireworks.
Those unable to be seated in the stadium can relax in their homes and enjoy the display on television.
The opening ceremony of the Olympics as unfolded on the tube is still a conversation piece. There will be many conversations pertaining to Carifesta X, both locally and internationally.
Many have journeyed to this beautiful land to sample our diverse culture, and many are privileged to present their samples.
The enthusiasm amongst the many proud ones who are representing their country has contributed to the positive energy that surrounds the festival. Many are coming for the first time and their expectations are high. Guyanese have risen to the occasion and are prepared to lay out the red welcoming carpet which has been engrained in our culture.
We have gotten accustomed to the theme song to the extent that the words have been carved on many tongues; tongues that will speak in vindication of our efforts.
The efforts were relentless; relentlessness to make Guyana proud and proud we will be. The sight of the hundreds of children gracefully moving across the green grass of the stadium will be one to behold. Their many long hours of rehearsals under meticulous and experienced choreographers will culminate in a dynamic presentation this evening. Guyana will be buzzing for the next ten days and will be the centre of attraction.
The Parrot would like to congratulate the leadership, our local participants and organisers for allowing us, the viewers, the opportunity to savour the local flavour. To the visiting participants: welcome; savour our beauty as we savour yours.
The opening day is here. It seems like only yesterday that the decision by the President to host the festival was made. Our time to prepare was shortened, but like true Guyanese, it did not deter the efforts.
I will be perched high on the roof of the stands enjoying my bird-eye view. So let the festival begin! Song. Dance. Speeches. Parade. Fireworks. Just get something and wave.
