2008 Southern Caribbean Squash Championship (SCSC) Queen, Nicholette Fernandes, fresh from her scintillating victory against Barbadian Karen Meakins, leads a team of young but experienced players into the team championships that got underway at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, Georgetown yesterday.
Five teams, Barbados, Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), Venezuela and host Guyana will vie for top honors. The teams were engaged in a march past that heralded the start of the championships.
Delivering the feature address, Director of Youth and Sport Neil Kumar commended the organizers and dubbed the Squash Association ‘the most accountable and transparent of all the other associations.’ Kumar also noted the involvement of parents as the catalyst to the smooth functioning of the body.
Marketing Director of corporate citizen and sponsor of the tournament GT&T, Wyston Robertson, said that his company is always pleased to contribute to sports. He said that GT&T always sees a special need to make a contribution to the lives of young people. “Welcome to Guyana and may you have an enjoyable tournament,” he bid the teams.
Guyana has won the team championship four times, 1978, 1982, 1990 and 2004.
Led by newly crowned SCSC Queen, Nichoette Fernandes the Guyana team will attempt to clinch the title for a fifth time.
Playing alongside Fernandes are Tiffany Solomon, a former Caribbean junior champion who is also a veteran in many senior matches, Keisha Jeffrey, the youngest national ladies champion, Kayla Jeffrey touted as the strongest and fittest player on the squad, Mary Fung-A-Fat who won her second junior Caribbean title this year and Alysa Xavier who will be making her first appearance at the senior level.
The men’s team will sport such names as Kristian Jeffrey, Regan Pollard, Raphael Degroot and Alexander Arjoon. Of the lot, though, all eyes will be riveted on Robert Fernandes a veteran of numerous national teams.
Fernandes has been plagued by injury that has forced him on the sideline over the past two years but has hinted at a return to form for this tournament. The other players that make up the men’s team are Oliver Kear-Downes. Robert McDavid, Alwyn Callender and Brentnol
Mounter.
In a match played yesterday morning the Guyanese men defeated the T&T veterans 3-2. They will resume duty at 09:00hrs this morning against the OECS veterans and the Barbados veterans from 17:00hrs.
