An accident at the corner of Campbell and Garnett Streets in
Newtown shortly after 21:00 hours yesterday resulted in at least three persons being trapped in two vehicles for a short while before being rescued by residents of the area.
According to reports, motor cars PJJ 545 and PKK 238, collided at the junction before they both ended up in a nearby canal.
It is the belief of some residents that the presence of thick overgrowth in the canal may have helped to save the lives of the victims.
One resident, Andrew James, said that he was alerted to the accident by a loud “blam” and decided to investigate.
James said that initially all attention was centred on PJJ 545, which had a male driver as its lone occupant.
The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was assisted from his vehicle by concerned residents and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital to seek medical attention.
But a few seconds later the hysterical screams of a young woman caused the residents to direct their attention to the other vehicle in the weed-filled canal.
However, it was quite a challenge to help the occupants of the other car, James said, since that vehicle had overturned in the canal following the collision.
The occupants of that vehicle were however, physically unhurt and opted to depart from the scene.
The crash attracted fire officers and a few police ranks who commenced an investigation.
