Despite some earlier setbacks, infrastructural works on the facilities to host Carifesta X are nearing completion. Of the venues to be used in the city and its suburbs, mainly the National Stadium, the National Cultural Centre, the National Park, the Exhibition Site Sophia, National Convention Centre, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the Gymnasium, only the National Park is behind schedule.
This was revealed by Minster of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony. However, the Minister assured that work on this location has been accelerated as workers on the job are working overtime to ensure its completion before the deadline.
Cultural activities at this venue are scheduled to commence on Saturday, and will host events mostly centering on youth with emphasis on more interactive activities that will include practical instructions in certain areas of Information Technology and Culture, like the teaching of playing certain musical instruments.
The Guyana Defence Force will also have a booth and will be demonstrating certain skills like rope climbing and camping.
“A stage according to internationally-accepted design has been erected at the National Stadium, and will be used for among other things, the opening ceremony, where more than 3000 participants will perform,” the Minister stated. It will also cater for super concerts and a ‘Hindu Night’ and a ‘Christian Night’.
Two auditoriums have been completed and all booths are ready at the Exhibition Site, Sophia.
“We are only waiting for the occupants, among whom will be international participants from nine countries, displaying their national cuisine, by actually preparing them on the spot. These participants are expected to arrive in the country and take up their slots,” Minister Anthony said.
According to the Minister, the International Convention Centre at Liliendaal is in full preparedness to host the many Symposia slated for this site.
The first big event there is billed for Sunday with renowned Caribbean writer, Derek Walcott.
“We have successfully completed all the physical work in terms of putting up screens and formulating the layout to mount exhibitions at the National Gymnasium and the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall,” the minister also noted.
Minister Frank Anthony claimed that Regions Two, Three, Five, Six and Ten are all ready to provide the necessary services and infrastructure to stage their aspects of the festival.
This, he said, was mainly due to a $5 million grant that each region received from his Ministry to cover costs.
“Overall then, at the present moment I can say we are 95 per cent ready. Within the next two days we would have come very close to finishing all the vital and necessary tasks to successfully bring Carifesta to Guyana.”
