Caribbean Women’s Squash queen, Nicolette Fernandes carries Guyana’s lone hope of a top three finish after reaching the semi–finals in the Ladies’ Open of the 2008 Cellink Southern Caribbean Squash Championships.
Fernandes, on a redemption path after suffering a career threatening knee injury, easily defeated Mary Fung–A–Fat 9–1, 9–2 and 9–0 at the Georgetown Club squash court yesterday to become the lone Guyanese to reach the semis.
The regionally acclaimed Fernandes was scheduled to play Barbados’ Cheri–Ann Parris in the first of the Ladies’ semi–finals last night. Parris had outlasted countrywoman and team–mate, Nadia McCathy 9–6, 9–2 and 9–0.
In the other Ladies’ semi, Barbados’ Lilianna White met the third female ‘Bajan’ player to advance to the penultimate round of competition, Karen Meakins. White had defeated local star Keisha Jeffrey in an epic battle.
White ousted Jeffrey with a 9–2, 4–9, 4–9, 9–6 and 9–2 win on Court One of the Georgetown Club yesterday while Meakins thrashed touring partner Carla Jackson 9–3, 9–1 and 9–1 on Court Three to advance.
In the Men’s Open competition, Guyana’s hope of a final–four placing, which rested on the shoulders of Kristian Jeffrey, died when Barbados’ Shawn Simpson got the better of the national men’s champion 9–3, 4–9, 9–5 and 9–1.
Jeffrey was eliminated at the quarter-final round of the tournament yesterday. Guyana’s dream of a male placing in the semis was solely based on Jeffrey’s performance after the early exit of the other locals.
Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States’ (OECS) James Bentick, Barbados’ Bryant Cumberbatch and Trinidad and Tobago’s Colin Ramasra all advanced to the Men’s semi–final playoff that was scheduled for last night.
Bentick had a marathon 2–9, 3–9, 9–1, 9–0 and 10–8 win against Barbados’ Gavin Cumberbatch in the preceding round while Bryant Cumberbatch beat Trindad’s Josh Pinard 9–7, 9–2 and 9–5 in straight sets.
In the other quarter-final match, Ramasra ended Venezuela’s Francisco Alberto Valecillo run in the contest with a 9–2, 0–9, 9–4 and 9–0 win, which set the stage for a gruelling showdown with B. Cumberbatch.
The Ladies’ and Men’s Open Finals are set for tonight at the country’s premier squash venue: the Georgetown Club. The Ladies’ final is timetabled for 7:40pm while the Men’s final is down for 8:20pm.
