The police are investigating a shooting incident which occurred yesterday morning at Aranka Landing, Cuyuni River, during which two miners were shot.
The victims, Roger Wade, 31, of Plantation Brans, West Coast Berbice, and Nevin Morgan, 27, of Lot 4 Public Road, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, who are both miners, have been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital in serious condition.
According to a police press release, at around 01:30hrs, both men were imbibing alcohol on the landing when shots rang out. It is not clear how they were shot.
Wade sustained gunshot injuries in his right side abdomen and right side neck, while Morgan was shot in his groin.
They were taken to the Bartica Hospital for treatment, and were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were admitted as patients.
Wade’s mother and sister were at the hospital yesterday, very worried about his condition.
They said that they were unaware of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but went to the hospital after receiving a call that Wade had been shot. Wade’s sister even knelt and began praying in the hospital compound.
Morgan was taken into custody and placed under police guard in the hospital ward. Reports state that he was wanted by the police for his supposed connection with a criminal gang.
However, his relatives refute these reports and claim that they have no knowledge of him being wanted by the police.
According to them, he said that he was at a party when he suddenly felt a burning sensation on his leg.
When he placed his hand on the spot, he realized that he was bleeding, but he does not remember anything else until he woke up on the boat transporting him to Georgetown.
Investigations are continuing.
