Wicketkeeper Dexter Solomon had six dismissals and off-spinner Ricardo Devers grabbed 5-21 to take honours on opening day of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Inter-Association under-17 two-day cricket trial at the DCC ground yesterday.
Solomon’s X1 were 44-3 replying to the 175 all out made by Carlos La Rose’s X1 when play ended yesterday and at the end of the final day today a 14-man squad will be selected to represent the City in the Inter-Association two-day competition which is scheduled to commence on Thursday as Demerara prepare for the Clico Inter-County under-17 competition which starts on September 6.
Devers, who had two batsmen stumped and two others caught behind by the very impressive Solomon, grabbed 5-21 from 12 overs and bowled with the type of maturity which was missing from his game during last year’s under-15 Inter-County tournament.
He got good support from National under-15 pacer Seon Daniels who captured 3-28 from nine overs and leg-spinner Claremont Duesbury who took 2-21.
After Clevon Hyman fended at a short ball from Daniels and provided the talented Solomon with the first of his six dismissals before a run had been scored, the spinners kept the shackles on the batsmen on a slow track in sultry conditions.
Left-arm spinner Dino Choo-Nee-Nam removed Joshua Lawrie (20) just when he and opener Rajiv Singh (25) were involved in ‘operation rebuild’ to leave the score on 48-2.
Kamal Ramkissoon (15) was just beginning to look settled when he edged a catch to Solomon off Devers, who then sent back Chanderpaul Hemraj off the next ball.
The 16-year-old GYO player struck again when Christopher Suraj (3) was neatly stumped by Solomon, who plays for GINC at the domestic level.
Singh was eventually bowled by Randy Balram while National under-15 Captain Kwame Cross missed a delivery from Duesbury and was stumped by Solomon who enhanced his growing reputation as the one of the County’s best Wicketkeepers at all levels.
Delon Fernandes played some delightful shots but just when he seemed set for a big score he was run out for a solid 32 with two fours and a six while Skipper LaRose finished unbeaten on an attacking 20.
Stoll then trapped Prem Sookdeo leg before for a duck in the first over of Solomon’s X1 innings before Alex Ramalho missed a pull at pacer Kevin Ogle and was bowled before he had scored to leave the score on 1-2.
Quincy Ovid (16*) and the left-handed Dayanand Roopnarine (14*) scored freely against the pacers before the leg-spin of West Indies under-15 player Amir Khan and left-arm spinner Raj Nanan put the brakes on the scoring with wily bowling to set up an interesting final day today when play commences at 10:00hrs.
