National Champs Pistons christens competition
By Edison Jefford
With national centre Nkossi Gurrick traded to Glands Trucking Service Bulls earlier this season, Wismar Pistons face their toughest challenge tonight in proving that they can win without the force in the middle.
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Basketball Festival featuring the top eight teams in Linden starts tonight at 7:00pm at the Mackenzie Sports Club court with Pistons taking on minnows New Ballers.
A win for Pistons is easy to predict against arguable the lowest ranked team of the eight listed in the competition, but to prove that they can consistently win when the ‘win–or–go–home’ event heats up is their real test.
Gurrick, one of the better centres residing in Guyana, took the trade to his hometown club based in One Mile Wismar after citing he was uncomfortable with Pistons, a club he led to the national first division title last year.
A source within the LABA told Kaieteur Sport that Gurrick’s transfer sheet said that he was not comfortable with the Raphael Damon led Pistons. The club’s president, Uborn Smith is also president of the LABA.
Gurrick was a vital part of Pistons’ ‘big–four’ on offence, which included forwards Quincy Jones and Trevor Profitt and guard Nevin Grenville.
This newspaper understands that Rensford Alleyne have stepped up to replace Gurrick.
New Ballers is a relatively new and young team that is still trying to get adjusted to more established teams like Pistons. Errol Dryden, Gavin Singal, Donald Benjamin and Shawn Ettienne lead the charge for them.
LABA General Secretary, Joe Chapman said that all systems are in place for the start of the competition. He further noted that the teams have pledged their support after a LABA team–briefing held on Saturday.
“We had a briefing on Saturday with the teams. They are committed. They did not have any problem,” Chapman informed yesterday, adding that one of their major sponsors fell through but the tournament proceeds nevertheless.
In the second game, Gurrick will make his season debut for Bulls along with team–mates Terrence James, forward Ryan Joseph and Dwight Wickham against the respected Jets at around 8:30pm according to the LABA.
Jets have acquired Allister Webster from Patriots. The player is expected to be on the team’s roster for the game tonight among guard Neil Simon, Delbert Kitt and Oscar Adams.
The LABA Basketball Festival is certainly on!
