A 25-year-old welder attached to the AH&L Kissoon Limited perished yesterday in the treacherous waters of the Abary Creek near the six-door sluice.
The body of Zahir Baij, of 243 Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, remains missing after he reportedly drowned at around 10:00 hours.
This newspaper understands that Baij was among a group of workers being transported to a location in the creek when the vehicle stopped to allow another worker to ease his bowels.
Baij reportedly took the time to wash his face at the edge of the creek, and fell overboard in the process.
By the time his colleagues realised what was happening, Baij was already being pulled under by the strong current near the sluice doors.
Although they tried to reach him with several pieces of branches, the efforts of the employees failed.
The matter was reported to the Fort Wellington Police Station, West Coast Berbice.
