– flee with canister of jewellery
Bandits posing as Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) employees escaped with a canister of jewellery, at around 14:00 hrs yesterday, after holding a Diamond Housing Scheme family at gunpoint.
According to reports, the two men, who showed no identification but carried notepads, arrived at the house in 14th Street, Diamond, and informed the occupants that they were from GWI and were checking the colour of the water.
Kamwattie Mohan, who was at home with her 29-year-old daughter, allowed one of the men to enter the yard, while the other waited outside.
On entering the premises, the man pretended to check the tap, but after announcing that the water was ‘clear’, the ‘GWI employee’ suddenly drew a handgun and pressed it to Mohan’s body.
The men then took Mohan into her house, where they bound the woman and her daughter, after placing them on the floor.
The daughter told Kaieteur News that the bandits then threatened to kill them if they failed to hand over their valuables.
The bandits eventually located a canister containing an estimated $3M in jewellery.
They also gathered up $350,000 in local currency.
Kaieteur News was told that Mohan’s husband arrived while the men were still on the premises.
The daughter said that one of the robbers fled via the back door with the canister. However, the other remained and also tied up her father.
He later fled with a video camera.
The victims eventually freed themselves and contacted ranks from the Golden Grove Police Station.
