The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited (GT&T) yesterday recognized the achievements of 21 of its employees’ children at its annual Bursary Awards presentation ceremony.
The awards were for children who were successful at the National Grade Six Assessment examinations.
The students are normally given monetary assistance, but, this year, the two top performers were also presented with the connection of DSL Internet at their homes.
The monetary assistance continues in the amount of $10,000 per year for five years, as long as the child stays in high school. However, there is the possibility of an extension of an additional two years if the child pursues sixth form.
The Bursary Awards have been running for over 10 years, and Public Relations Officer of the entity, Allison Parker, explained that over $8 million has been spent by GT&T on the Bursary Awards thus far. This year, the highest achiever, Delicia Paul, received $12,000; while the next child in terms of marks, Kiaza Lewis, received $11, 000. The other 19 recipients were given $10,000.
At the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of GT&T, Major General (Retired) Joseph Singh, spoke of the need for investing in the future as he encouraged the children to continue their diligent work and strive to be the best they could be.
Delicia Paul, who secured 530 marks, said that while Mathematics and Science were her favourite subjects, she hopes to go into the Science stream and eventually become a paediatrician.
Angela Stewart, Delicia’s mother, a Customer Services Representative at the company, said that she was extremely proud of her daughter, because she focused and really applied herself to achieve such a good grade.
