The 2008 Goodwill Swimming Championship featuring the best age group swimmers from Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and Barbados is set for take off on Friday morning at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
Team Trinidad and Tobago is expected to touch down here today, a number of their supporters arrived yesterday. Suriname and Barbados will arrive tomorrow, the Surinamese expected to travel overland.
Secretary of the host Association, Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Dr. Karen Pilgrim, speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said that all systems are in place for another successful event but that sponsorship was still a challenge for her entity which is faced with a budget of 8 million dollars.
“Finance continues to be a major challenge for us. It has been trickling in with many individuals contributing.”
Some 112 events are listed over the three days of competition August (15-17). The cost of an individual event is $25,000 while a relay is $50,000.
Members of the public and private sector wishing to make donations can make contact with any member of the GASA.
The last time Guyana hosted Goodwill was back in 2005 when T&T won ahead of Suriname and Guyana but it was the locals’ best ever showing.
In 2006, Suriname hosted and won, Barbados competed for the first time with a combined club team.
Last year, the Bajans were admitted as a full member of the Goodwill block and participated in the Twin Island Republic where the home team won with 1163 points followed by Suriname 1359.5, Barbados 944.5 and Guyana with their 12 member team tallying 312 points.
Both Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname will be travelling with the full compliment of swimmers, 40 and 8 officials while the Barbados team will be made up of 29 athletes and 7 officials.
Guyana will be fielding a 38-member squad.
Honorable Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony will declare open the championship on Friday at 11:00hrs. (Franklin Wilson)
