Ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit have begun investigations into the discovery of several postcards containing 60 grams of cocaine that were intercepted at the Guyana Post Office Corporation.
On Thursday and Friday last, seven postcards posted to addresses in Holland were intercepted at the Post Office by CANU and police Narcotic Ranks.
According to Intelligence Officer Surajbans Rao, to date, there has been no arrest, but police are working on some leads. CANU further noted that this is the third instance when postcards with cocaine have been found destined for Holland.
In the past, the majority of those intercepted were for the United States. Recently, however, there has been a decrease in postcards destined for the US.
In addition, CANU ranks successfully completed a three-day marijuana eradication exercise in the Corentyne area.
According to Rao, the exercise began on Friday last, and was conducted at Number 52 Village, some 100 yards west of the Corentyne River. During the exercise, some 2500 marijuana plants, ranging from one to seven weeks old, were burnt.
A house located at Number 51 Village was then searched. During that search, a wrapped parcel of compressed marijuana weighing one pound was found. However, no one was arrested during the exercise.
Roa said that the field, which is some one and a half acres of land, has been under surveillance for some time now, and as a result the eradication exercise was held.
