International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Course Conductor Argentine Alejandra Cabaglio arrived in the country last Saturday evening and conducted her first session for aspiring Level One coaches yesterday morning at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Cabaglio, whose flight was delayed due to the non-functioning of the runway lights at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, held sessions on – How to teach the basics in table tennis and also offered to the participants hints on how to coach children.
The Physical Education teacher, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree, told Kaieteur Sport that she was a former member of the Argentina national team and had the opportunity to compete in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
“I am also a national coach for my country for the disabled and an accredited ITTF coach as well.”
Cabaglio’s late arrival has forced the organisers the Guyana Table Tennis Association to extend the sessions so that the participants get maximum benefit from the high level coaching that is being offered.
The soft spoken Argentine said that coaching children should entail as much fun activities so the programme is designed in such a manner where successful participants can go back to their respective constituencies and impart the knowledge gained.
The Course will see participants engage in practical presentations, physical training, multi ball training which she described as an important component for coaching disabled children.
She said that for Guyana to have better players it needs to have good coaches, adding that the current programme it is a good way to improve the game here. “You need to start with the children, especially in the schools.”
The Course is expected to last for five days and some twenty participants are attending the sessions including Trinidadian Kamaria McLeod.
