NUMBER SEVENTY-SIX VILLAGE, CORENTYNE – Police in Berbice are investigating two armed robberies suspected to have been committed by the same gang.
The first incident took place just after midnight on Sunday. The victim is Keith Rogers of Number Seventy-Six Village on the Corentyne.
He was relieved of $300,000.
He operates a liquor restaurant below his home. At about 00:15 hours a waitress went to the back of the yard and was confronted by the robbers.
According to police reports, the robbery was carried out by four masked men, one of whom was armed with a hand gun, while two of them carried cutlasses and pieces of wood.
Reports are that the fourth man, who was unarmed, forced the waitress back into the restaurant. While two of the bandits remained downstairs with the waitress, using an inner stairway, the other two bandits got to Keith Rogers who was on the upper floor sleeping, and robbed him.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Springlands Police Station, but by the time police ranks arrived on the scene the robbers had already left.
Meanwhile, at about 00:50 hours, Mamood Hussein, a 43-year-old businessman of Race Course, Corriverton, was robbed of US$1,500, a gold band, one gold chain and two gold rings, along with a digital camera.
He was attacked by four men fitting the same description as those who robbed Rogers, and carrying the same weapons.
At the time, Hussein was clearing up after a farewell party.
The men entered his yard and held him up, along with his guests, at gun point.
The victims were taken to the upper floor, where the bandits ransacked a suitcase and removed the items.
As the men were leaving the scene, they fired a round but no one was injured.
Up to last evening, no one was arrested but the investigations are continuing.
