COOLIDGE, Antigua (CMC) – Ramnaresh Sarwan slammed a half-century to guide his side to a solid eight-wicket win over Chris Gayle’s XI in the third Stanford Superstars practice match Friday.
Playing at the Stanford Cricket Ground here, the right-handed Sarwan stroked 66 from 46 deliveries as his XI rattled up 170 for eight off their 20 overs. In reply, Gayle’s XI could only muster 162 for eight from their allotted overs.
With his side struggling at 30 for two in the fourth over, Sarwan and fellow countryman Travis Dowlin who hammered 55 from 43 deliveries, added 81 for the fourth wicket to put the innings back on course. Sarwan was severe on the opposing bowlers, cracking five fours and three sixes while Dowlin counted six fours and two sixes.
Danza Hyatt finished with the best figures of two for 22 with his medium pace, while Gayle claimed two for 28.
In their turn at the crease, Gayle XI got a fighting half-century from Lyndon James who struck 50 from 42 deliveries with two fours and three sixes but it was not enough to carry them to their mark.
Gayle, batting at number six, managed just 24 from 12 balls with two fours and two sixes while fellow Jamaican Xavier Marshall made 23 from 24 balls with four fours.
Pacer Jerome Taylor was the main wicket-taker, capturing three for 30 runs while Kieron Pollard claimed two for 39 and Lionel Baker, two for 52.
Two more matches were to be played yesterday with another scheduled for today and the final one carded for Tuesday.
The matches are part of the two-week training camp currently being staged in preparation for the Stanford 20/20, US$20 million match on November 1 at the Stanford Cricket Ground.
