Promising theatre costume managers and designers enlisted in the Carifesta technical theatre training programme will be able to take their skills to a higher standard with the recent training provided by Trinidad and Tobago costume designer Carlyne Pereira-Lacaille.
Ms Pereira-Lacaille, who put her decade-old theatre costuming experience to work, conducted sessions last weekend and earlier this week, exposing about 87 participants to elements such as conceptualisation, working within budgets, meeting deadlines, and the use of substitute materials.
Explaining the importance of budgeting and creativity, Ms Pereira-Lacaille said that a designer may have a concept of what they want the costume to look like, but may have a limited budget; but this should in no way inhibit their design.
She added that the use of alternative materials can be employed, as “this in fact is where creativity comes out.”
The trainees, as part of the practical aspect of the Theatre Training Programme, will be staging four productions today and tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre. These include Makantali, For the Love of Aidana Soraya and Moon on a Rainbow Shawl.
“I am really excited to see what they have come up with for their productions,” Ms Pereira-Lacaille said.
In addition to the workshop, the Trinidad and Tobago theatre costume designer will also be assisting with designing the costumes for Guyana’s signal play for Carifesta X, ‘Legend of The Silk Cotton Tree.’
