Police have detained a 16-year-old boy who they believe has vital information about the slaughter of the eight miners at Lindo Creek last June.
Kaieteur News understands that the teen was arrested on Wednesday near Ituni. According to a police official, investigators took the suspect to the Lindo Creek camp where the miners were slain and cremated.
Afterwards, he was taken to Kwakwani for further questioning.
Police officials say that the teen is a member of the gang that is led by notorious fugitive Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins, whom investigators allege orchestrated the killings.
Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, has refuted suggestions that the miners were murdered by Joint Services ranks.
According to Greene, an eyewitness implicated Rawlins and his gang in the killings. Investigators also allege that Rawlins had boasted about murdering the miners.
According to the police, ballistics tests revealed that spent shells found at the Lindo Creek murder scene matched weapons that the Rawlins gang had used in other mass killings.
In June, gold miner Leonard Arokium visited his Lindo Creek camp and discovered the burnt remains of all eight members of his crew.
An autopsy revealed that the victims were shot and at least one of them was beaten to death with a sledge hammer.
