The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) is in sorrow over the passing of one of their own, Edward Singh.
The AAG in a release from its President Claude Blackmore expressed its, “…profound sorrow to the family, relatives, friends and the entire Athletics fraternity of the sudden passing early Sunday morning August 03, 2008 of Mr. Edward Singh a member of the Council and Competitions Director of the Association.”
The release further stated, “Mr. Singh came into the realm of Athletics administration through the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) which body has responsibility through the Ministry of Education for the organisation of the National Schools Athletics Championships in Guyana.
He started out as a Technical Official and his mathematical skills as a teacher came into play where he soon joined the diminishing group of persons with the ability to construct and mark a track on the various Cricket grounds, the association used for competitions.
With a penchant for hard work, he was soon identified as a suitable candidate to participate in a “Competition Directors” course at the RDC, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Later he qualified as an IAAF TOECS Lecturer on a course at the RDC Santa Fe Argentina and in fact conducted the first TOECS course in Guyana April 21-26 last.
Mr. Singh was a Teacher by profession and at the time of passing was the Head Teacher (Principal) of the Cove & John Secondary School, located on the East Coast of Demerara. He was also a graduate of the University of Guyana where he obtained a Bachelors of Education degree.”
It has been advised by his family, that the body would be at the Sandy’s Funeral Home from 09:00-10:30 hours for viewing thence to the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) where a joint celebration of his life and work would be done by the AAG and the GTU from 11:00-12:30 hours today.
The body will then leave the GTU for his residence at Paradise, ECD, where a Service will be held from 14:00 hours.
Meanwhile, a number of Expressions of Sympathy have been pouring into the AAG from sister Associations/Federations, including one from Mr. Pierre Weiss, General Secretary of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) who has indicated that, “Mr. Singh will be missed very much and will always remain in our hearts and thoughts”. May His Soul Rest in Peace!
