As an official report is still to be released on the cause of death of 21-year-old Natasha Vieira, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a press release yesterday stated that the corporation has been forced to break its silence on the issue because of several media reports, which according to the hospital, contained ‘inaccurate statements’.
According to the release, the GPHC decided to say very little on the incident, in an effort to allow the police to complete its investigations.
“It was in no way an attempt to ‘downplay’ the issue as was stated in one section of the media.
The Georgetown Public Corporation family is deeply saddened by the death of Ms. Vieira because she has been in our care since age nine,” the release stated.
Vieira was brought to the GPHC Paediatric Ward in 1996 and has remained at GPHC since that time. The GPHC only learnt that her surname was Vieira when her mother visited for the first and only time in March 2007.
The hospital claims that Vieira’s mother was only seen again on Sunday August 3, 2008 when she visited the hospital and enquired about her daughter.
GPHC stated that several attempts were made by the Administration, past and present, to have Vieira placed in a home. However, it was explained that the attempts proved fruitless.
Kaieteur News understands that the hospital tried to place the young woman at Schesira Home in Mahaica, but they were told by the officials there that the institution does not have space to keep her.
The decision was then taken to house Ms. Vieira in the Female Observation Ward of the Georgetown Hospital.
According to the GPHC, the hospital has no record of Ms. Vieira ever being abused while a patient at the hospital.
It was revealed that her alleged attacker still remains a patient of the ward at the hospital, and according to the GPHC, this is because she is still receiving treatment.
The hospital press release stated that no further comment will be made on the matter until the investigation into the death is completed by the police. The results of the post mortem examination are slated to be released to the Georgetown Hospital today.
Sections of the society had expressed their frustration that there were nurses on duty and they saw nothing. In this regard, it was noted that after the internal investigation is completed and negligence was found on behalf of the nurses, then disciplinary actions will be taken.
Reports indicated that Natasha Vieira was strangled with a piece of cloth by another patient of the Psychiatric Ward some time around 4:00 hours on Saturday last, after the same woman had beaten her.
Another patient of the ward brought the incident to the nurses’ attention but there was apparently no action by the nurses. Sources said that Natasha was strangled on her bed, dragged into the bathroom and left under the shower for almost half an hour. Another patient went to the bathroom and turned off the shower. At that point, the woman who strangled Natasha went back to the bathroom and dragged her back to her bed.
