Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has said that the Guyana anti-retroviral programme is very advanced, since recommendations by the International AIDS Society-USA Panel in relation to treating HIV and AIDS patients are already part of the local programme.
Minister Ramsammy said those guidelines are already established in the local programme. “So this new guideline is catching up to Guyana’s.”
This, he said, shows how advanced is Guyana’s anti-retroviral programme. “Guyana strongly supports this recommendation to be implemented in other countries,” the minister said.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, Guyana has noted with satisfaction the recommendation to start therapy earlier when treating HIV and AIDS patients by the International AIDS Society-USA Panel in its new guidelines.
The new guidelines were written by the International AIDS Society-USA Panel, and recommend starting therapy before immune-system CD4 cell counts decline to less than 350 cells per microlitre. Additional factors should be considered when starting therapy at higher CD4 levels.
The Health Day News featured an article on the new guidelines, which were slated to be presented at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City on Sunday.
The authors of the guidelines also recommended that frontline regimens be individualized, and that certain drugs, such as Sustiva (efavirenz), be given high consideration. The guidelines also addressed changing therapies and when to introduce new drugs.
Guyana is being represented at the AIDS conference by a team of about 25 local staff. The conference ends later this week.
