The 2008 Mr. & Miss Cellink Senior Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships were launched yesterday at main sponsors Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company head office.
This year’s edition is expected to be very competitive among the males and females athletes and will all unfold on the night of August 15 at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground.
Sharing the head table at yesterday’s launch were GT&T’s Senior Marketing Officer Rhonda Johnson along with President and General Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) Frank Tucker and Franklin Wilson.
Johnson in her statement said that GT&T and the GABBFF have enjoyed a very good relationship over the years as a result of the discipline of the local athletes and administrators and when approached, had no reservations in agreeing to the championship being named after its mobile brand.
GT&T has agreed to make the competition among the athletes and fans much more interactive and will be running a number of promotions in this regard leading up to and on competition night.
”The public will be invited to send a text to a pre identified number and will get a chance to win tickets for the competition. In addition, we will introduce for the first time in Bodybuilding, the People’s Choice. Again, the public can text who they believe will win the male and female segment of the 154 – 165 category and some lucky persons will Bird Phones.”
“We would like to encourage the public to be part of this strong spectacle as the strength and zeal that will be exhibited by the participants will be a reflection of the hard work and strength of our network.”
Tucker thanked GT&T for the confidence placed in the Federation and promised that the imminent onstage battles would vindicate their being on board.
Male and female athletes will compete in eight categories on the night, the males will vie for supremacy in the under 154, 154 – 165, 166 – 176, 177 – 185 and 186 and over divisions while the females will compete in the Ms. Fitness, Ms. Body Fitness and Ms. Bodybuilding.
Reigning Mr. Guyana, Clint Duke of Total Package Gym in Linden is expected to defend his crown against some stiff opposition. Among his rivals will be fellow Lindener and inaugural Mr. Hugh Ross Classic winner Mark Perry.
2008 Novice and Intermediate winner Timeon Mendonca is expected to make his debut at the senior level also.
Athletes who have been hard at training will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to show case their work over the past weeks and apart from winning their respective categories will be aiming to gain a place on the GABBFF team for the 2008 Central American and Caribbean Championships set for the Bahamas September 25 – 28.
The athletes (male and female) will be judged based on the seven compulsory poses, front double biceps, front lat spread (men only), side chest, back double biceps, back lat spread (men only), side triceps and abdominals and thighs.
Prizes (cash & trophy) will be awarded to the 1st to 3rd place competitors while the overall male and female athlete will also be rewarded separately.
The GABBFF also has plans for a number of side attractions on competition night which includes an appearance by the contestants of the Annual Miss Jamzone Pageant and a display of designer wear by local designer, Olympia Small.
Other corporate support for this years championship to date have been garnered from Banks DIH Limited, Giftland Office Max, Constellation Tours, Farfan & Mendes, Demerara Bank, Courts, Roraima Airways (Arrowpoint Resort), Quality Fast Foods, Upscale Restaurant, and L. Seepersaud Maraj & Sons
Caribbean Airline will unveil their partnership for the championships later this week.
Showtime on Friday August 15 will be 19:00hrs.
