WHIM VILLAGE, CORENTYNE: – Venezuelan Jose Abraham Severiko Lopez was remanded yesterday on an attempted murder charge for last Friday’s attack on Rahat Ally, the proprietor of the Malinmar Hotel at Springlands, Corentyne.
Lopez, 31, appeared before Magistrate Chandra Sohan at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge.
His case has been postponed and transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for August 14.
It is alleged that, last Friday, Lopez and his now dead accomplice, Robielkis Robigcel Monte Deoca Arias, rented a room at the Malinmar Hotel at Springlands.
According to reports, at around 20:00 hrs on Friday, the two men complained that their shower was not working.
When proprietor Rahat Ally entered their room to investigate, they allegedly held him at gunpoint.
Ally was struck in the head with a handgun and bound with duct tape.
Police say that the two Venezuelans were forced to flee after an employee heard the commotion and contacted the ranks who were in the area.
Lopez and his accomplice headed to the river, where they allegedly stabbed a speedboat owner and took his boat.
However, they were intercepted during a brief shootout with ranks from the Berbice Anti-Smuggling Squad (BASS).
Lopez’s alleged accomplice, Robielkis Robigcel Monte Deoca Arias, sustained a cut over his left eye. He was taken to the Skeldon Hospital, where the injury was sutured.
However, it is alleged that, at around 08:00 hrs on Saturday, Arias complained of feeling unwell.
He was admitted to the same hospital, where he succumbed.
