A Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard is now nursing serious burns about his body after an explosion occurred on the vessel on which he was stationed.
Kaieteur News understands that the rank was aboard the vessel at the New Amsterdam Ferry Stelling on Saturday night when he heard a strange noise.
This newspaper was told that the rank then went down into the vessel, which was dark, to check where the noise was coming from.
He then lit a lighter and, according to a source, a loud explosion followed.
Upon checking the vessel after the explosion, the other Coast Guard ranks saw their colleague lying on the ground and quickly rushed him to the New Amsterdam Hospital. A GDF ambulance later transferred him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was admitted to the Burns Care Unit.
Kaieteur News understands that the other Coast Guard ranks that were on the vessel are being interrogated by army officials in an effort to ascertain exactly what transpired on the vessel.
