A week-long list of activities has been planned to celebrate the 23rd death anniversary of Guyana’s former President, the Honourable Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
According to a release from the Forbes Burnham Foundation, the observances kick-off tomorrow with a car wash at Texaco Service Station on Mandela Avenue, from 9:00hrs to 17:00 hrs.
That very morning there will be a “Burnham Memorial Race Walk,” starting at 6:30 hrs at WRSM Headquarters at Public and Vlissengen Roads, Kitty, and ending at the Place of the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens.
The observances continue on Monday, with a press conference at the Office of the Mayor of Georgetown, His Worship Mr. Hamilton Green, at 10:00 hrs. Green was widely regarded as Burnham’s right hand man.
On Wednesday, there will be two events, the foundation said, which will be organised by the People’s National Congress under the theme “Guyana National Service – Burnham’s Vision – 35 years later.”
At 07:30 hrs, there will be laying of wreaths at the Mausoleum, Place of the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens, Georgetown. President Burnham was laid to rest there.
Later that day, at the headquarters of the National Congress of Women, Public Road, Kitty, Brigadier General (Ret’d) Joseph Singh would be making an address on the theme “A Celebration of the Life and Work of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham” at 16: 30 hrs.
Next Friday, there will be a symposium at City Hall, starting at 17:00 hrs (5pm) with two main presentations by Mayor Green and Andrew Hicks, a senior lecturer at the University of Guyana. In addition to the cultural items and opportunities for questions and discussions, there will also be a photographic exhibition.
The celebrations close off next Sunday with the launching of the Georgetown Chapter of the Forbes Burnham Foundation at the Critchlow Labour College from 14:00 hrs.
The foundation stressed that the increased activities to commemorate this year’s death anniversary are reflective of a “renewed surge of interest in the life work of Forbes Burnham, who gave us guidance and leadership during his tenure of office, to overcome the difficulties which we once again face.”
Burnham is inevitable and must not be forgotten. His teaching must serve as a beacon in the struggle for our liberation, the foundation noted.
