Murder accused Trevor Major may have used the negligence of ranks to make good his escape on Wednesday.
Police, in a press release, said that two ranks are under close arrest, although investigators do not believe that there was collusion on their part to allow the prisoner to escape.
Major, who was committed to stand trial in the High Court for a 2007 murder, was said to have made good his escape by removing the lock from the door of the prison van to escape.
A source close to the investigations told this newspaper that for some reason the padlock on the door of the van was left open, enabling Major to use the opportunity to secure his freedom. “These ranks are not known to be corrupt,” the source told this newspaper.
Major, 20, of Mackenzie, Linden and Mocha, East Bank Demerara, was among five other remanded prisoners who were being transported in a police prison van from the Providence Police Station back to the Georgetown Prison.
It is being said that he managed to pick the handcuffs and open the prison van door and escape in the vicinity of Croal Street.
According to the source, a police patrol unit was behind the prison van and after reaching the heart of the city, the patrol diverted, providing Major with the opportunity he needed.
The fugitive is before the court for allegedly killing Marvin Sancho at Supply, East Bank Demerara, on September 4 last year.
Sancho was found dead after he allegedly threatened to reveal a homosexual relationship between himself and Trevor Major. . Police have issued an all stations bulletin in their pursuit of the fugitive.
Last year two police ranks were placed before the court after they were accused of involvement in the escape of a female murder accused while she was being transported to the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice.
And just over a month ago, notorious murder/ robbery accused Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles escaped from the Sparendaam Police Station lock-ups.
Several ranks were transferred following that incident. The two escapees remain at large.
