A massive manhunt has been launched for a murder accused who staged a daring escape while being transported from the Providence Magistrate’s Court, shortly after he was committed to stand trial in the High Court, yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that Trevor Major was committed to stand trial in the High Court for a murder committed on the East Bank of Demerara.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Major and other prisoners were being transported from Providence to the city when he made good his escape.
This newspaper tried unsuccessfully to get a comment from the police; no one was prepared to divulge any information.
One source said that Major managed to pick a lock on the enclosed prison van to secure his freedom.
But senior police officials are questioning the explanation since it is almost impossible for a prisoner to access the lock which is on the outside of the vehicle.
No one seems to know where exactly along the journey the prisoner made good his escape.
This newspaper understands that the ranks responsible for the prisoners are being questioned, along with other prisoners who were being transported at the time of the escape.
Last year two police ranks were placed before the court after being accused of involvement in the escape of a female murder accused while she was being transported to the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice.
And just over a month ago, notorious robbery/murder accused Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles escaped from the Sparendaam Police Station lock-ups.
Several ranks were transferred following that incident.
The two escapees remain at large.
