– blames lack of resources for delay
The Auditor General has completed the report of Guyana’s Public Accounts figures for 2006 which will be tabled in Parliament within one week for debate.
This was disclosed by Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, during a ceremonial handover of the report yesterday at the Public Building.
Making the presentation to the Speaker was Auditor General (acting), Deodat Sharma.
Stressing that the report attests to the transparency and accountability in Guyana, Mr Ramkarran reminded that in the past the report would be delivered to the Minister of Finance after which it would be debated in Parliament.
But ongoing reforms have now mandated that the report be handed over to the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The Auditor General called for the report to be debated in the National Assembly as early as possible.
Meanwhile, in a release to the media of the overview of his office, Sharma said that lack of adequate resources continue to hinder further progress but that the office continues to strive to produce its best.
“In its continued drive for improvement, the Audit Office will aim to improve on its yearly reporting. This can be seen with the current report being done in accordance with current and international practices of exception reporting, highlighting only key findings.”
The Audit Office, according to the release, is hoping that there will be a reduction in the size of the audited Public Accounts reports since separate reports emanating from the Performance and Forensic Audit Section will be producing its own reports on various sectors and issues.
Among those present at the handing over ceremony were members of the Public Accounts Committee, the body tasked with reviewing reports of government’s finances.
