Mystery surrounds the death of senior Office of the President official, Albert Henry, 54, whose decomposing body was discovered in his 599 Fourth Street, Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara house yesterday afternoon.
The case is baffling investigators since after an examination of Henry’s body, Government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh could not determine the cause of death.
The police have not ruled out foul play and are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination which is to be done today to conclude if Henry, called ‘Baba’, was indeed murdered.
The discovery was made yesterday following enquiries about Henry’s whereabouts when he failed to turn up for work since last week.
Upon checking the house, investigators found Henry’s nude body lying on a mattress with a towel wrapped around him. His television set was still on.
Neighbours said that they last saw Henry, who lives alone in the single flat house, last Thursday.
According to reports, Henry was seen in his yard last Thursday with a woman having a heated conversation.
One neighbour reported that he had been getting a foul smell for the past two days but thought that it was emanating from the uncollected garbage, since the refuse truck did not visit the area over the weekend.
He said that he covered his garbage drum with plastic but the smell still persisted and it was then that he became suspicious.
The dead man’s brother told media operatives at the scene that Henry, who was single, had been living at the newly built house for about one year.
Henry’s two daughters who were at the scene declined to talk to reporters.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh said that initial examination of the body could not determine what caused Henry’s death.
“We can’t determine as yet what caused his death. His skin was peeling off so we will have to wait until a post mortem is performed.”
He, however, estimated that Henry died about three to five days before the discovery of his body.
“Once you see rigor (mortis) gone that means that it is more than two days,” Dr. Singh told the media.
Bernice Lawson, the dead man’s aunt, described him as one of her best nephews.
The woman said that Henry was to visit her on Saturday but he never showed up.
She then tried to contact him by telephone on Monday but got no answer.
According to Lawson, someone called her yesterday morning and informed her that Henry was found dead in his house.
Investigators removed a cutlass from the house and are to carry out checks to see if it was used in any way to cause Henry’s demise, although they are not too optimistic.
