Defending champions Guyana made a bright start against Trinidad and Tobago with a resounding six wicket win in the opening game of their 20/20 Schoolgirls Windball Cricket Series yesterday, at the National Park Tarmac.
Guyana set a victory target of 98 after reducing the visitors to 97-8 off the allotted overs were guided home through a responsible 27 not out from Captain Kattie Ann Punch, who was later named Player of the Match for the Guyanese. Her innings included two boundaries.
Other good knocks came from Shenica Campbell, who stroked 21 with 2 fours, while Teniesah Cort supported with 16. For the visitors, Kamana Ragoobar was the pick of the bowlers with 2-14 off 3 overs.
Earlier, Guyana won the toss and sent the opposition into bat and despite some poor out-cricket which saw them drop a few catches did well to restrict them to a manageable total.
In the Trinidadian innings, Akala Sheppard, who was later, named Player of the Match for the Trinis top-scored with 19 and Rachael Bissoon made 14.
Punch took 2-15 off 4 overs, while Akaze Thompson captured 2-18 from 4. The second match is scheduled for today, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Director of Sport Neil Kumar delivered the feature address at the opening ceremony which preceded the start of the match and also bowled the first ball to get things going.
Kumar first congratulated the Organisers Al Sport & Tour Promotions for making the effort in making the tour possible, adding that it would help to foster and even strengthen the level of co-operation between the two countries.
He said that it also provides the opportunity for young girls to be actively involved in sports, a feature that is lacking here in Guyana.
“I am proud to see the development of sports among our youths and this is a positive sign that more young people are yearning to get meaningfully involved in activities that could provide a basis for their holistic development.” Kumar recognised that sport is getting more developed in Guyana at all levels and in all the regions.
