Yesterday a man described as a known character was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
Troy Ames, 29, of 41 Middle Street, Pouderoyen, allegedly snatched one gold chain valued at $120,000 from Orlando Kirton, on July 26, last.
Kirton was said to be walking along Regent Street when the accused snatched the item then proceeded to run west along Regent Street.
Kirton said that he began running after the man when a public-spirited citizen in a tinted vehicle queried the reason for his running and he told the man that his chain was just snatched.
Kirton said that they both began to go after the accused whom they later caught and took to the Brickdam Police Station.
The accused was represented by Defence Counsel Adrian Thomson who, in his bid for bail, said that his client was beaten while in custody.
The police refuted this and contended that the accused tried to escape from lawful custody and sustained the injuries.
Representing the state was Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews who asked that bail be refused because the accused had several cases before the court and that if bail be granted the accused would not return to court.
The matter will reconvene on September 5.
