President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and veteran player Errol Tiwari defeated Shiv Nandalall to take championship honour in the Oasis Café and Yong’s Bakery sponsored tournament at the Oasis Café on Carmichael Street over the weekend.
It was always going to be a keenly contested final since Tiwari and Nandalall are considered among the top five players in the country.
The final lived up to its hype with both players seeking to take the advantage but it was Tiwari’s experience that prevailed in the end. For the win, the GCF President pocketed $40,000 while Nandalall claimed half that amount as the runner-up.
Tiwari’s trip to the final was guaranteed after he defeated Everton London in the semi-final, while Nandalall got the better of surprise package Neil Khan in the other semi.
The competition involved 16 players divided in four groups with respective group winners advancing to the semi-final stage.
The competition started two weeks ago with Learie Webster leading after the opening day. He, however, failed to maintain the form on the final day losing to Khan in a group ‘A’ clash.
