The body of 22-year-old Nathuram Darbhunauth, of Lot 24 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was yesterday discovered at Middle Walk in the Uitvlugt canefields on the West Coast of Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that the young man had reported for duty as a member of a spraying (chemicals) crew attached to the Uitvlugt Estate shortly before his body was discovered.
Shortly after noon yesterday, a foreman of the Uitvlugt Estate received a report of a missing worker who was spraying a section of the fields in the Uitvlugt backlands.
A search was immediately launched in the area, and the spray can used by Darbhunauth was found first, on a dam bed.
The search party combed the surrounding area and eventually found the man’s body in the nearby trench.
He was taken to the dispensary at the estate, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police were called in, the man’s family notified, and the body taken to the mortuary.
According to the Guyana Sugar Corporation, a full investigation has been launched into the man’s death.
Kaieteur News was told that there were no immediate signs of foul play on the man’s body. It was unclear whether the man was wearing protective gear at the time of his death.
