A vendor, who is accused of stripping a man of his belongings at Stabroek Market, has been granted bail after he pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The accused, 36-year-old Troy Smith, allegedly robbed Totaram Deodat of one gold chain, one Samsung cellular phone and one wallet containing $8,560 on July 20, last.
In the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle, who read the robbery with aggravation charge to him, Smith was said to have committed the act with another person.
Initially, Smith pleaded guilty with explanation. Leading his own defence Smith told the court that on the day in question he felt like eating ice cream and he went to Demico to purchase the ice cream.
He added that when he was finished, and was heading over to the Stabroek Market, a police came up to him and accused him of robbing a man.
Smith further informed the court that the police even told him that the person who carried out the robbery wore similar clothes to those he was wearing at the time.
The accused added that the police then asked to carry out a search on him which he allowed. Smith said the police rank who carried out the search only found $11,200 in local currency on him and then arrested him and took him to the Brickdam Police Station.
“When we reach at the station de police put a gun to me head fuh mek me confess,” Smith said.
After listening to his explanation the Magistrate entered a not guilty plea for the accused.
Bail was not objected to by Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews who also informed the court that none of the stolen items were recovered.
Bail was set at $50,000 and Smith was ordered to return to court on August 22.
