The 2008 Goodwill Swimming Championships is scheduled for the Land of Many waters Guyana, from August 15 -17 and the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will commence time trials to select a 40-member team for the championships tomorrow.
Secretary of GASA Dr. Karen Pilgrim has said that Guyana is aiming to better past performances at this competition which will also see competitors from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.
The Castelani Pool on Homestretch Avenue is the venue for the 3-day trials which is expected to see fierce rivalry for the available places on the team.
In each category, male and female, four places are up for the taking with the ‘A’ standard qualifying times being the 3rd place times achieved at last years competition.
Dr. Pilgrim said she is expecting very good responses from athletes in all the categories ranging from 8 and under up to 15 – 17.
Trials commences tomorrow afternoon from 16:00hrs, warm ups start one hour earlier. Competition will continue on Saturday and end on Sunday.
Corporate Support
To make the hosting of Goodwill a success, GASA has a budget of 8 million dollars to ensure that this objective is achieved.
A number of private entities and individuals have already signaled their intentions of partnering with GASA by making tangible contributions with others making commitments.
To date they have raised just under one million dollars. Among those making commitments are Digicel and Continental Group of Companies.
According to Dr. Pilgrim, GASA is asking companies to sponsor at least one the 112 events. The cost of an individual event is $25,000 while a relay is $50,000.
Those companies and individuals already on board include: R. Bassoo & Sons Construction Company, Constellation Tours, Dorado Speed Swim Club, P&P Insurance Brokers & Consultants Ltd., Boskalis Guyana Inc, Stephanie Fraser, International Technical Supplies, Laparkan Holdings Ltd., Nigel’s Supermarket, Farfan & Mendes, Micro Design Technology, North American Fire Insurance Co., Connections Travel Service, Patterson Associates, Hand-in-Hand Trust, Dr. H. Goede, New Building Society, DeSinco Ltd., Bharrat’s Jewellery and Liquor Store, Variety Woods & Greenheart Ltd and Ms. Sonia Hinds.
