The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) recently launched a “Livelihood Development for Rural Women Project” funded by International Development & Relief Foundation (IDRF) of Ontario, Canada at Kingston Masjid, Corriverton, Berbice.CIOG and IDRF are joining together to help rural women in Guyana.
IDRF has provided CDN$31,000 (G$6,200,000.) and CIOG will contribute CDN$1,200 (G$240,000).
“The objective of the project is to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities and income generation to rural Guyanese women’.
“Many of these women are marginalized so we are very pleased to partner with CIOG in an effort to create employment, and build the entrepreneurial skills as well as the self confidence of the women”.
“Projects like this one will certainly change the lives of all those who will participate and benefit from the training” says Fazeel Ferouz, CIOG President.
“It will assist in the development of the person, the community and our country as a whole.
We look forward to partnering with IDRF to alleviate poverty through education and training.”
CIOG will select 160 women entrepreneurs in the New Amsterdam and Corentyne areas to build their capabilities by providing training and technical assistance on catering and sewing/knitting.
The project will first be implemented in Corriverton and then New Amsterdam. The courses will be of six months duration.
IDRF is a registered Canadian humanitarian organization that implements relief aid and development projects overseas in accordance with the Islamic principles of human dignity, self-reliance and social justice.
The mandate of IDRF is to help vulnerable communities improve their living conditions and enhance self-sufficiency. Since its inception in 1985, IDRF has sponsored development and relief programs in 24 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. IDRF is supported in its work by CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) and by the generosity of Canadians from a variety of backgrounds.
CIOG was formed in 1979 and since then has been working in cooperation with NGO’s to provide necessary services to the Guyanese community. Its general objective is the upliftment of the Guyanese people, irrespective of race or religion.
