The Guyana National Stadium is now the second major cricketing facility in the Caribbean to have lights in place to allow for night games. The multi-million-dollar lighting system was commissioned last evening.
Speaking at a simple commissioning ceremony, cricket legend and the most successful captain in West Indies cricketing history, Clive Lloyd, said that West Indian players were previously at a disadvantage when it came to night games overseas given that there were not enough practice sessions under the night lights regionally.
He added that to compound the situation further, some overseas stadiums are at times reluctant to allow the players extra practice to adjust to the lights given the cost of lighting a stadium.
The lights were installed in Guyana at a cost of some $125M and will be powered by two 350KVA GEM (generators).
There are six 160-foot high structures each bearing nearly three dozen 1,500 lamps.
The MUSCO Lighting Company of the United States of America was awarded the contract to undertake installation of the lights.
Technical Consultant, Walter Willis, told the gathering at the ceremony last evening that the installation process was conducted under the International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines that takes into consideration the number of lights, positioning and intensity.
The civil works aspect of the project which involved the reinforced concrete foundation and other aspects such as underground wiring was undertaken by Dynamic Engineering Limited.
MUSCO provides permanent or temporary lighting for major sport events and stadiums.
With offices in about nine locations worldwide, the company has in the past provided lighting for the Super Bowl and was the official lighting company for the 1984, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
Spectators at the stadium remarked that the lights transformed the stadium from darkness to daylight.
Guyana now awaits its first international night cricket match as well as other sporting events.
