Guyana’s junior squash team made an impressive start to the team competition of the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships, in Bermuda.
As expected the girls team disposed comfortably of Barbados 4-1, with Daina King the only player to loose against under-19 girls finalist Cheri-Ann Parris of Barbados.
The Boys took on the OECS in the morning and chose to rest two of their key players, Raphael DeGroot and Abhishek Singh, for their tricky afternoon assignment against Jamaica.
The boys duly dispatched the OECS 3-2, with wins from Deje Dias, Alexander Arjoon and Jean-Claude Jeffrey.
In the evening against Jamaica under-15 Abhishek Singh started the ball rolling with an impressive 3-0 over Josh Mahfood. Deje Dias continued the momentum with a clinical 3-0 win over Stephen Reid.
Next up it was number 1 under-19 Raphael DeGroot against Bruce Burrowes, the player who had knocked him out of the individual championships.
DeGroot put on a master class, pouncing on anything loose to keep Burrowes on the defensive, then finished the points with clinical efficiency.
He set the tone for the rest of the team with the surprise 3-0 win and Nyron Joseph followed his example with gritty 3-2 victory over under-13 finalist Jake Mahfood.
It was then left to Alexander Arjoon to complete the unexpected whitewash with a 3-0 victory over Julian Morrison.
This means that even if Guyana loose in their final group match against the strong Cayman Islands boys team they are still guaranteed of advancing to the semi-final stage. Guyana are hunting team glory in the boys, girls and overall team categories.
