The festive atmosphere of Crop Over is in full swing here on this 166-square mile Island but Barbadian cricket fans had no reason to celebrate yesterday as rain had the final say on the last day of their third round three-day TCL Group regional under-19 cricket match against defending champions Guyana at the BET ground.
Heavy overnight and consistent rain yesterday forced the umpires; Anthony Farrell, Roger Brooms and stand-by Steven Lord to call off the match at 14:30hrs after only six overs were bowled effectively ending the contest as a no-result.
Both teams collected four points with Guyana maintaining their lead with 28 points while Barbados moved to 22 points.
Coach Hubern Evans said that while he was hoping to go for first innings points yesterday he was satisfied with the result since Guyana still has their six-point lead over second placed Barbados going into the penultimate round which is scheduled to commence on Saturday when the South Americans battle one-day champions Jamaica.
Guyana resumed the final day on 35-2 in overcast conditions in reply to Barbados’ 300-8 declared and added 11 runs before rain stopped play at 10:19hrs.
Overnight batsmen Jeetendra Sookdeo (4) and night watchman Herman Latcha (6) were the not out batmen when a sharp shower stopped the match.
Persistent rain prevented any more play despite feverish efforts by the ground staff who, unlike on the first day when Barbados were batting, ensured that the bowler’s run-up was well covered with the home team desperately needing at least first innings points to close the six point gap between them and front runners Guyana.
Match Referee Carl Brooms informed the Guyana team that Tea would be taken at 15:10hrs and an inspection would be done at 15:30hrs.
Although the rain stopped, conditions remained cloudy but the covers were removed just after 13:00hrs and the pitch showed no adverse effects from the rain.
While the pitch remained dry, the Umpires expressed concern with several soggy spots inside the 30-yard area.
Another downpour just after 14:00hrs ended any hopes of the players returning to the field and the game was quickly called off.
Barbados Coach Dexter Toppin said he was very disappointed that the weather robbed his team the chance of dismissing Guyana under 300 yesterday since he felt that with two wickets down and still another 266 needed for first innings points, his team was in a strong position to reduce Guyana’s points lead in the six-team competition.
“Our next two games are at grounds that are easily affected by rain and it is a bit disappointing that as the home team we have to play our last three games at such venues when it is known that rain is likely at this time of year,” Toppin added.
The Guyana team is scheduled to practice today from 09:00hrs at the Wanderers ground but this session could be in jeopardy since more rain has been forecast for Barbados.
