Ranks of the Customs and Excise Department yesterday conducted a search on a container and found a quantity of marijuana.
The container was in the vicinity of the now defunct Guyana Rice Development Board where several persons engage in the scarp metal trade.
The shipment was purportedly delayed given that Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company had expressed concerns that the container may have been laden with some of its copper wires.
During the search a rank found a bag containing the substance. This bag was placed outside the container and the rank headed back into the container to continue his search.
At this time someone who was observing what was transpiring absconded with the quantity of marijuana that was placed outside of the container.
Meanwhile, police in Berbice stopped a passenger boat plying the Canje Creek and conducted a search during which they unearthed 500 grams of dried marijuana in a bag belonging to a male passenger. The man was arrested and is in police custody.
